"Biggest Loser. . . "

Before I get into into detail I just want everyone who reads this to know that I am, and will always be a Miami Dolphin fan …

The only way to start a conversation about the Miami Dolphins is by saying . . “What the shit is that …?”

What are they doing over there ? It seems like they are trying to hurt a franchise that still holds a record for the only undefeated season. This is a franchise that is starving for something to look forward to. There are some serious issues on the field, and massive holes along the roster. However none of those holes can be filled unless the Fins clog their biggest gaping massive ditch of a hole, at the general manager position. Hell maybe even the owner should walk. In fact thats it !!!! They should both leave!!

image

(Above Photo: Owner Stephen Ross…Wow, maybe he should get under center)

Since Ireland was hired in 2008 only one good thing has happened. He worked for Bill Parcells. Once that was over the debacle that is the football in South Beach started. After the Dolphins made the playoffs in 2008, everything seemed to head downhill. There really has not been any major improvement in the team. The Dolphins just kind of sit there, lost in the abyss that is the AFC. Yeeessss they have played Tom Brady more than their fair share in the last decade, and yeeessss they have gone through more quarterbacks and head coaches than any franchise in that decade… So … Do something about it for pete’s sake. It is absolutely ludicrous that the Dolphins have not tried to steer their fortunes into a positive direction. It just seems that year after year the off-season is the worst part of the season(aside from Reggie Bush, we love you Reggie). I would rather go through an entire season of Matt Moore at the helm, than watch Jeff Ireland and Stephen Ross run another Dolphins off-season… Guess what Fin fans, we will probably get both in 2012/2013.

image

(Above Photo: Jeff Ireland… The Fins management mastermind)

A brief history of events…

Remember when the owner flew in his helicopter with Ireland to try and sway Jim Harbaugh to come join the Dolphins regime when they already had a head coach in Tony Sparano… And it made the news. And Coach Sparano had to hear from Rich Eisen’s mouth that his employer was looking for his replacement. AND THEN they were unsuccessful in the hiring of Harbaugh( who signed with 49ers and completely turned that franchise around). So where did they go from there ? They said sorry and signed Sparano to a two year extension. AND THEN fired him before the end of the season… “What the shit is that ?”

Do you remember in 2010 when the Miami Dolphins were preparing for their draft day ? Do you remember when Jeff Ireland sat down with then a potential Dolphin draft pick in Dez Bryant ? And then went on to ask Dez whether or not his mother was a prostitute ? Are you kidding me Jeff. Did you really ask Dez Bryant whether or not his dad was a pimp, and whether or not his mother worked for him ? Have you ever conducted a job interview Jeff ? “What the shit it that ?”

Fast forward to this off-season. The Dolphins owner Stephen Ross announced that he would try and pursue Peyton Manning to come to the organization. It was convenient seeing as Peyton had a place in Miami, and would be there during the free agent process periodically. It seemed like the Dolphins were a great fit for Manning. And maybe they could even get the likes of Reggie Wayne to sign there. Well, Reggie didn’t sign there, and Peyton has now obviously found his home in Denver… What the hell happened guys? It was so obvious that the Dolphins needed some help all over the place, and it could have been a great start to acquire Peyton Manning, one of the best offensive generals the game has ever seen, and potentially one of the smartest football players to ever walk the earth. But no … Dolphin’s management failed again and are now going another way with it. Maybe everyone thought they would be fortunate enough to get Matt Flynn …  (WRONG)… He signed with Pistol Pete and Seattle Seahawks. Thats two very good fits for the Fins, that led to a bunch of heart ache and depression…

Also during this off-season they traded public nuisance Brandon Marshall. Im fine with it. What Im not fine with is getting two third round picks for Marshall, who is arguably one of the better, more physical receivers in football. I just think that there was more out there that the Fins could have got for Marshall, and it seems like they just rushed the deal to get him out of the door.

It is so hard to project what the Dolphins will do from here. I have heard countless radio shows, and organizations just rule them out completely for next season. I hope that they do more than continue build Matt Moore’s mediocracy. I hope it is more than continuing to shovel tremendous amounts of pressure on a rookie coaching staff, that actually could be quite good. And I certainly hope they don’t go after Tim Tebow thinking he could be the answer, but nothing and I mean nothing surprises me about Dolphins management.

image

(Above Photo: New head coach Joe Philbin pointing out how big the problem is for the fish)

The worst part about this situation to me, is that I can’t see an end for that management system. So here we go again. I wonder what the Dolphins will do on draft day. You never know what your going to get with this team. But like all loyal fans, I will keep watching, and hoping that at some point during an off-season, or during the course of the season that there are signs of a light at the end of a tunnel.

So its finally over and people can stop tracking the whereabouts, and attempting to plot the landing zone of the 4 time NFL MVP Peyton Manning. Manning has agreed to terms with the Denver Broncos. He signed a 5 year 96 million dollar contract this week and will spend the next 5 days in Denver to get used to the facility and meet the medical staff, so that they can plan the next parts of his rehabilitation plan.

image

During his press conference Manning was asked why he choose Denver over the other potential suitors… He simply couldn’t answer them. He spoke about how he could have seen himself with any of the other teams aggressively trying out for his services. Denver just feels right to Peyton. In my opinion it seems like two time Superbowl winner and now Bronco executive John Elway had a lot to do with Manning’s decision.

“My goal is to make Peyton Manning the greatest quarterback ever to play the game.” John Elway.

Nobody was more pleased than John Elway and John Fox to get the phone call from Peyton on Monday morning. In fact Coach Fox said he almost pulled a hamstring in his celebration… I hope Tebow doesn’t read this.

image

Denver makes a lot of sense for Manning when you step back and take a look at exactly what he was looking for in his new home. He had strong offers from the 49ers and the Cardinals. But Manning had said that the NFC was not the first on his priority lists. I dont think he wanted to put a wrench in Eli’s chances, and I dont think he ever wanted to be in the same division as his brother. The 49er’s are a great team, and they are ready to win a Superbowl, we all were witness to that during last years performance. Now that Manning has signed with the Broncos, you can be sure that Alex Smith will return to the 49er’s and continue to improve under coach Harbaugh.

Arizona seemed like a good fit, considering he could continue his career indoors and play the likes of the Rams, and Seahawks twice a year. Larry Fitzgerald spoke of his dinner meeting with Peyton. He thought they would talk about the city, the organization, and the potential of living out a career in Arizona. But all Peyton did was talk with Fitzgerald for over 6 hours of which offenses they were the most successful in, and what systems and strategies the Cardinals would need to get the offense running at a higher efficiency… Thats Peyton. Thats what he does. Quarterback. Football.

Denver makes a ton of sense. He knows, we know, and our mothers probably would bet on the Broncos winning that division. In an interview Tony Dungy stated that Manning’s decision to go to Denver is a good one. Dungy compared the Denver defense to that of the 2006 Superbowl winning Colts. “It’s really not that different from the Defense we had during our run. Manning knows that if he gets a good lead early, the D can protect the lead with the best of them.” Dungy also went on to state that money will not play a factor in his decision, and it didn’t.

All in all Peyton Manning made the decision that felt right to him. He had an opportunity with all of the teams involved and he feels that this is the best “fit” for him. It will be interesting to see how Peyton utilizes the tools around him to build the Broncos into what could be a consistent Superbowl contender. Im sure everyone has their doubts of whether or not the former Superbowl champion can steer the Bronco’s franchise to greater things, and so do I. But one thing is for sure, the Denver Bronco’s got a lot better when he signed that deal. Time will tell whether or not Peyton can be a fraction of what he was, or maybe even start where he left off.

"Blue Jays Pitching Staff Looks to Improve on Last Year Woes"

Last year it was clear to most who watched the Toronto Blue Jays that they are a team that struggles with pitching. During the 2011 regular season the Blue Jays were 24th in total ERA (4.32), and 22nd in WHIP(walks, hits per innings pitched) of 1.35. They blew a ton of save opportunities, and made some off season moves to bring in more accomplished closers, and bullpen staff. The Jays will look to improve on their record of 33 saves in 58 save opportunities, as this was another issue of concern. However most of the blame went to the inconsistency of the starting rotation.

image

If this spring is any indication of an improved pitching unit, things are coming up for the Blue Birds. The Jays so far in Dunedin are 5th overall in ERA of 2.94. The Jays pitching staff although early, is showing great pitching mechanics, and a very good knack of managing pitch counts, a team focus before the spring campaign began. Here is a breakdown of the starting rotation and how they are coming along so far this spring.

image

Ricky Romero (LHP){Ace}—> 2 games, 2 games started, 5 innings pitched total, 2 hits, 4 strikeouts. His most recent game was on Sunday March 11th against the Braves, and he looked very sharp. He struck out 4 batters in 3 innings of work.

Brandon Morrow (RHP)—> 2 games, 2 games started, 5 total innings, no earned runs, 2 hits, 3 strikeouts. He played today, Monday March 12th, and faired strongly against Baltimore. Its important to note here that after he left the game, the bullpen had his back and didn’t surrender a run until late in the ball game. The Jays prevailed 4-1.

image

Dustin McGowan (RHP)—> 1 game, 1 game started, 2 innings, 1 hit, no earned runs, and one strikeout. McGowan looks healthy and is pitching with confidence. He keeps throwing strikes when he’s ahead, and when he’s down in counts. He is one of the pitchers in the Jays rotation that does not screw around, and goes right after hitters.

Brett Cecil (LHP)—> (1-0), 2 games, 2 games started, 3 innings pitched, 1 hit, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout. John Farrell believes that a healthy and successful Cecil is essential for the Jays to come back to the 90 win plateau.

image

Henderson Alvarez (RHP)—> (1-0), 2 games, 2 games started, 3 innings, 1 hit, 1 run, 2 walks, 3 strikeouts. This is a young Blue Jay pitcher that could really strengthen the Blue Jay rotation. He uses control to fan opponents, and his ability to go longer in games plays to his advantage. Like all young pitchers he needs to remain focused on his locations during the entire course of ball games.

Baseballolitics-"Update from Down South"

Spring training in both Arizona and Florida is underway, and there is a buzz being generated already about the upcoming baseball season.

Toronto Blue Jays

Jose Bautista was in mid season form yesterday as he hit two long bombs in a 5-2 victory over the Houston Astros. In fact Bautista is looking like he could not be in better shape for the upcoming season. It’s early, but through 5 games he is batting .417 with 2 HR’s, and 3 RBI’s, add a slugging percentage of 1.000 and you have yourself the AL silver slugger in mid season form. If he keeps that up, Jay’s fans everywhere can keep smiling about their captain and franchise player.

image

image

On the topic of hot hitters for Canada’s only team, 22 year old third basemen Brett Lawrie is ripping it up in Dunedin. The BC native has had a total of 16 at bats thus far. He has 8 hits, including 4 doubles and is tied for the team lead with 7 RBI’s. To me personally the most impressive stat is his team leading 3 stolen bases. Lawrie is showing coaches and fans that he wants to be an impact player and leader for this young Blue Jays unit…Power to him, I would love to see that. Lawrie has always had his critics breathing down his neck about his achilles heel, fielding. But this is something that can be worked on through repetition and practice, and it is clear that the third basemen is devoting time to his areas of need. For the people scoring at home, he has 12 put outs of a possible 15 total chances. That equals a fielding percentage of .933.

I will also mention quickly that Travis Snider is producing in potentially the most important spring of his career. The RF/OF is entering his fifth season with the team, and needs to prove himself worthy of a roster spot let alone a staring role. So far he is answering the call, leading the team with 3 HR’s and 7 RBI’s. All of this in 6 games by the way… Were all routing for yea bud, its about time you show fans north of the border what you are capable of.

B) Yoenis Cespedes

image

This young man defected from Cuba this past summer, and moved to the Dominican Republic. He sought out free agency and signed a 4 year, 36 million dollar deal with the Oakland A’s. He made his major league debut yesterday Saturday March 10th. Lets just say A’s fans have much to look forward to. He had 3 at bats…

1) Bottom 1st—> walked on 6 pitches

A’s coach Bob Melvin…”His first at bat was as impressive as the others, you know he wanted to go out there and show what he has, and he takes a walk.”

2) Bottom 2nd—> slapped a grounder up the middle with runners on the corners and 1 out.

Showed he had a quick bat against a good pitcher in Johnny Cueto.

3) Bottom 4th—> Drilled a HR(solo) off Jeff Francis on a 1-2 count.

He received a standing ovation for this. He fouled off 4 straight pitches before smacking a ball that left the park in a hurry to say the least.

Cespedes is built more like a hard hitting safety at 6’0”, 215 pounds. He has tremendous explosiveness and can cover ground quickly in the outfield. His bat speed is well above average, and everything you hear about him leads you to believe he is an incredible competitor. I will mention that he has a set of the most unique eyebrows I have ever seen… In all seriousness it seems as though the A’s and wizard GM Billy Beane potentially got a steal with this contract. It will be interesting to see how he performs during the season.

C) Buster Posey

The Giants catcher made his debut Friday after missing most of last season with a brutal lower left leg injury. He played Friday and performed well behind the plate showing no signs of discomfort. In better news he felt great the day after…

“Thats what I really wanted to see — how I felt the next day,” said Posey “Everything feels good.”

image

Everyone in the Giants clubhouse was relieved to hear the 2010 NL rookie of the year speak positively about how his body reacted to catching a major league game. He is scheduled to catch 4 innings today, and get some more at bats. Its good to know one of the majors most premier young talents is back at it.

D) Yu Darvish

It was a relief Im sure for the Texas Rangers front office to see Darvish shine in his debut last Wednesday. Darvish looked fantastic in his debut starting the game and pitching two solid innings of shutout baseball. He surrendered two hits, and struck out three batters. He did not appear nervous at all, and was never once shaky or not confident. He displays complete control not only in his pitches but also mentally. “Yu Darvish takes the role of a rock star quite well.” says Dan Patrick of the DP show. I couldn’t agree more.

image

Yu Darvish has one of the most impressive pitching arsenals I have ever heard of. He threw all of his pitches in his last start. Let me rhyme them off for you:

Four seam fastball, two seam fastball, cut-fastball(which is becoming essential for MLB pitching success. Just ask Sports Illustrated, they wrote a two page spread on this very same topic in last years June issue), four seam change-up, split change-up, slow curve, and both a sweeping slider, and a hard slider… . That is absolutely ridiculous.

E) Adam Wainwright

image

I wanted to bring up the St. Louis Cardinals ace, because I think a lot of people forget that he is potentially the best pitcher in baseball, and he didn’t even play for the Cards during their World Series season. He pitched for the first time in over 500 days, and started where he left off. He threw 2 innings, with no hits, no runs and 2 strikeouts. During a post game interview he spoke about feeling really good, and normal again. “I felt like my old self.” His old self struck out 22% of batters he faced in 2009, 2010. Look out, this guy is real good.

Primetime NFL Mock Draft(1-4)

The Randall ST. Sports Wire will be releasing four picks at a time. These are our take on how Round 1 of the NFL draft will go down in April 26th.

This mock draft was written and set to be published before the Washington Redskins had traded three first round draft picks to acquire the second overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Therefore the results are as follows.

by: Trevor James Rauhala

1)

image

Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Luck, QB Stanford

image

This pick is set in stone, Luck will be the QB of the future for the Colts. Luck has all of the tools to be a franchise QB, and he has had a full year to prepare for the pressure of guiding a franchise. The only question is how he will handle getting thrown into the fire that has become the Indianapolis Colts situation. Go ahead and get your #12 Colts jersey’s ready folks.

2)

image

Cleveland Browns (This pick was from St. Louis. {The pick now belongs to Washington, and will be updated in Edition 2 of the Primetime NFL Mock Draft})- Robert Griffin III, QB Baylor

image

Griffin III literally ran away from the Heisman competition in his junior year at Baylor. The dual threat QB was unstoppable, as he led the Bears offense with 4,239 yards passing and another 699 on the ground. Those are Michael Vick/Cam Newton caliber numbers, so understandably Griffin has rocketed up draft boards this year. In fact, rumour has is that there are multiple NFL general managers out there that would at least consider drafting Griffin over Luck, which speaks to the hype that has built around the Heisman trophy winner.

3)

image

Minnesota Vikings - Matt Kalil, OL USC

image

The Vikings are blessed to have perhaps the best RB on the planet in Adrian Peterson, however they stumbled to a dismal 3-13 record in 2011. Although some of their early season problems can be attributed to the uninspired play of Donavan McNabb, who has re-defined the term ‘playing shape’ in recent years, the Vikings offensive line struggled to open holes for peterson all year. In addition. the Vikings are currently breaking in a new franchise QB in Christian Ponder and they would be wise to protect him in any way possible. Matt Kalil is a premier OT prospect in the mould of Jake Long, or Joe Thomas. He has all the physical tools and a great football pedigree, as does his older brother, fellow USC alumni and current Carolina Panthers star Ryan Kalil. The Junior from the PAC-12 offers the Vikes the potential to solidify their blindside protector role for years to come, and this pick would be a great step in their rebuild. Morris Caliborne, Justin Blackmon, or a trade down for more picks are all possibilities if the Vikings pass on Kalil, but there is no better match of need and talent for Minnesota than the USC OT.

4)

image

St. Louis(From Cleveland, but this pick will remain with the Browns) - Justin Blackmon, WR Oklahoma State

image

The St.Louis Rams are in a much better position as a franchise than their 2-12 record suggests. Their status as a trendy pre-season playoff pick notwithstanding, the Rams had a terrible year that ultimately cost head coach Steve Spagnuolo his job. Luckily Jeff Fisher was available, and after a lengthy courtship chose the Rams, and QB Sam Bradford, over the Miami Dolphins. The best gifts a franchise can give to a young QB like Bradford are an experienced coach, a solid run game, pass protection and a stud WR. The Rams have brought in Fisher and RB Steven Jackson should have at least another two solid years left in the tank. So, with Kalil off the board, the Rams(or anyone else in this spot) are thrilled to select Justin Blackmon. Even before his dominant Fiesta Bowl performance (8 rec, 186 yds, 3 TD’s!!!), Blackmon was firmly the top WR available this year. Even though he doesn’t possess game-breaking speed, Blackmon has the strength, body control, and ruthless mentality that allows him to flat out dominate at the collegiate level. He has no trouble separating from DB’s and is at his best in big moments. All in all, the Rams should be thrilled to trade down and still come away with a true weapon for their anemic passing game.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Morris Claiborne, CB LSU

image

The Bucs were arguably the most disappointing team in the NFL last season, as their 4-12 record was a poor follow-up to the 10-6 team in 2010. The Bucs problems were so widespread that they cost Head Coach Raheem Morris his job, only a year after his breakout campaign. Whoever is hired to replace him will have several holes to plug, but none is more glaring than CB. Even though Ronde Barber is still playing solid, if unspectacular defense, he turns 85 next year, or at least its staring to feel that way. Couple that with the erratic behaviour of the talented Aqib Talib, and it makes complete sense for Tampa to grab the best corner in the draft. Claiborne was a vital cog in the dominant LSU defense this year, and he should be ready to contribute from Day 1. He doesn’t have elite timed speed, but his physical tools are still more than adequate to be a long time NFL starter. Besides, he cant possibly be too slow, as he was a dangerous punt-return man for LSU as well. When you consider that Tampa had a -207 point differential, it’s obvious that their pass defense needs to improve, and fast. Claiborne is a great piece to build around as the Bucs try and prove that 2011 was a fluke, and not 2010. Other possibilities: Trent Richardson, Jonathan Martin

6.

image

Washington Redskins - Dre Kirkpatrick, CB Alabama

image

If we are to believe everything we hear and read, than the Redskins are interested in Matt Flynn, Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Peyton and Archie Manning. All kidding aside, the common denominator is a need at QB, but the Redskins probably don’t have the assets to move up and grab one of the big two QB’s this year. Thus, they have to settle for Kirkpatrick, who is no slouch in his own regard. Kirkpatrick has ideal size and speed to be an NFL DB, as the Junior measures 6’3” and 195 lbs, and runs in the 4.4-4.5 region. Those numbers would make many NFL scouts drool, and if you throw in Kirkpatrick’s winning record at Alabama, he has the makings of a top-10 pick. While his detractors might say it’s difficult to gauge a player who plays for a unit as dominant as the Bama defense, Kirkpatrick’s physical tools, and the fact that he performed well at the Scouting Combine should ensure he keeps his spot in the top half of Round 1. A recent arrest for Marijuana possession is unlikely to have any impact on his draft stock. But remember that Washington would jump at the chance to trade for any of the aforementioned QB’s, so keep an eraser handy for this pick.

7.

image

Jacksonville Jaguars - Quentin Coples, DE UNC

image

Coples is the type of player who can drive scouts and talent evaluators crazy, as he clearly possesses all of the physical tools to be a dominant NFL pass-rusher. However, after pouring over the film from his days at UNC Chapel Hill, Coples demonstrates an inconsistent motor, which is football speak for saying he is sometimes lazy and disinterested. Fortunately for him, when he wants to get it going, there are few O-linemen who can stop him. Coples had a solid performance at the Senior Bowl, but that was expected from such a gifted player. Not many college DE’s stand 6’6”, weigh 285 lbs, and run around like a linebacker, so Coples has a unique physical skill set that will ensure he gets picked in the top half of Round 1. The Jaguars make sense because they simply do not have an impact pass rusher, and it has plagued their defense for years. It is imperative that they grab an impact defender this year, having spent numerous lottery picks on offense in recent years. Other possibilities: Melvin Ingram, Dre Kirkpatrick, Morris Claiborne.

8.

image

Miami Dolphins - Mike Adams, OT OSU

image

While Miami is still in need of a new QB to at least battle incumbent Matt Moore for playing time, it appears they will avoid trading up this year, and perhaps look to Packers back-up Matt Flynn. In fact, Miami WR Brandon Marshall has even taken to campaigning for Flynn during the pro bowl in January. Regardless of who is under centre for the Dolphins next year, they are in need of a boost on the O-line. Despite the outstanding play they receive from Jake Long, injuries in 2011 showed just how thin Miami is up-front, and Adams should be able to step in and start at right tackle. One aspect the Ohio State product has going for him is his size, as he stands 6’8” and weighs in at 320. After a strong senior bowl week, the competition to be the first OL off the board has gotten even more interesting. Whether its Adams or somebody else, the Dolphins should look OL here and invest in the big ugly boys up front. Other possiblities: RGIII (they wish), Reilly Reiff, Jonathan Martin.

I saw that you had the Bills picking Courtney Upshaw, and I thought you might want to rethink that. We recently switched back to a 4-3 defense, and he wouldn't fit with what we want to do on defense this year.

Thanks, and you’re right about the switch. However, Upshaw has lots of experience playing with his hand in the dirt at Bama, and would project well as a DE in a 4-3. This guy flat-out gets after the qb, no matter where he is lined up. If buffalo wants more traditional measurables, another scheme appropriate fit would be Quinton Coples or Melvin Ingram

All the best, and keep following!

Carolina Panthers - Michael Brockers, DT LSU

image

It’s hard to talk about the Panthers these days without mentioning Cam Newton, who had one of the finest rookies seasons in NFL history. He is clearly the foundation upon which the Panthers will re-build, but that being said, their defense was embarrassing this past year. I cannot help but think back about their season and remember how many times Newton valiantly led the team back to a fourth quarter comeback/cover, only to see it go to waste because their defense had dug too big of a hole early on. Simply put, to give Cam a chance, they need to get better on D. Brockers is another stand-out from the LSU defense who capitalized on a fantastic red shirt sophomore campaign and declared for the draft. Like other players from those dominant LSU/Alabama defenses, Brockers has his critics, but there is nobody questioning his physical gifts or his numbers. Brockers is a huge DT at 6”6 and he racked up 10 tackles for a loss this year, which was an instrumental part of the suffocating Tiger defense. Brockers would be a great addition as the Panthers try to bring their defense up to speed with the Pro Bowler Newton.

10.

image

Buffalo Bills- Courtney Upshaw, DE/OLB Alabama

image

I will show mercy and only quickly gloss over the Bills’ collapse following their big 4-1 start. Given the strong play of Fred Jackson, CJ Spiller, and Ryan Fitzpatrick (sort of) in 2011, the Bills know they have to build up their defense in order to compete in the tight AFC East. After playing Tom Brady twice a year for a decade, it’s obvious to the Bills front office that they need to pressure and hit the Pats QB if they hope to win. Even though their last pass rushing 1st rounder was a total bust (Aaron Maybin), the Bills need to select Courtney Upshaw from the National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide. Upshaw has turned a strong regular season and a fantastic performance in the BCS final against LSU into a 1st round-lock status, and the Bills could do a lot worse than adding a player like Upshaw to their D. Upshaw is a game-changer and he piled up 9.5 sacks in his Senior season. Although he has been tagged with DE/OLB tweener label, Upshaw should benefit from the emergence of Von Miller, Elvis Dummervil, and Lamar Woodley, all of whom have enjoyed success at the NFL level after being told they didn’t have a true position. If Upshaw isn’t the man for the Bills, look for them to stick with the defensive theme, i.e Devon Still, Luke Kuechly, or Dont’a Hightower.

The Seahawks managed to salvage a 7-9 record this year, but it remains difficult to name their team identity or even an obvious forte. Two bright spots were Pro Bowl picks RB Marshawn Lynch, and SS Kam Chancellor, but beyond those two were little to get excited about. Not surprisingly, the Seahawks have several areas where they could use an upgrade. A pass-rushing threat is central to any teams defense, and South Carolina’s Melvin Ingram looks like he fits the bill for Seattle. Ingram is similar in build to Upshaw, but he would probably fit best as a DE in the Seahawks 4-3 defense. The Gamecock had 10 sacks in his senior season. He would provide the Seahawks D with an element that was sorely missed this past season. On the other hand, Pete Carroll could throw everybody for a loop and draft Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill. Was there anybody more upset than Pete by Matt Barkley’s decision to return to USC? Other possibilities: Jonathan Martin, Reilly Reiff

Kansas City Chiefs - Reilly Reiff, OT Iowa

image

The Chiefs had a tough break in 2011, with devastating early injuries to Jamaal Charles and Eric Berry followed by the premature end of Matt Cassel’s season. This team has shown promise, especially the defense, and especially when Eric Berry is healthy and terrorizing opponents from the secondary. On offense, there identity is Charles and the run game, so coming away with a top rated OT prospect like Reiff is win-win. Reiff consistently demonstrated his talents as a run blockers at Iowa and that would complement the game breaking Charles, while also following GM Scott Pioli’s draft model. Linemen, Linemen, and more Linemen. Reiff is no doubt the top rated OL on many team boards, and the Chiefs have to happy to add this 6”6, 300 pounder to their emerging young O-line.

Change is Good. . .

The Toronto Maple Leafs made a long overdue coaching change last Friday. Ron Wilson goodbye… hello Randy Carlyle. To the educated hockey fan this does not appear to be much of a change in coaching styles, from one taskmaster/disciplinarian to the next.  But that being said there is a fundamental difference between these two coaches. Carlyle hasn’t lost yet as the Leafs head coach… and the media has nothing really to say yet. Pressure has been lifted off of the Buds, and it seems as though everyone in the organization is breathing regularly again. It will be interesting to see how coach Carlyle proceeds with the blue and white, but one thing is for sure… everyone’s watching.

The Leafs host the Bruins tonight and it will be the homecoming debut of their new head coach. The Bruins have played the same type of hockey that won them the Stanley Cup a year ago. However with all of their good play this season they are 4-5-1 in their last 10, and they just lost a strong character game against the Eastern Conference leader New York Rangers.

Toronto is a team going through a major transition, there’s no doubt about that. This is a team that desperately needs an identity. So maybe its time to kick the shit out of Boston. The Leafs have not been able to beat the Bruins this season. Not only that, but they have been embarrassed by Boston more than once this season. So far through four games the total score is 23-6, and that includes a 7-0 romp at the Air Canada Centre. Enough is enough fellas.

image

No Bruin has killed the Leafs more than Vancouver native Milan Lucic. The 23 year old winger has 10 points(5G, 5A) against the Leafs this season through 4 games. He will need to be shut down if the Leafs have plans of winning. The Toronto D men need to physically take it to Lucic. Every time he moves the puck, skates with the puck, or shoots the puck, he should be hit. In fact that should be the game plan for the rest of the Bruins. This entire season under Ron Wilson it appears as though the Bruins just walk all over the Leafs. That has to change tonight.

image

Speaking of change, Boston will be looking to adjust their recent two game losing skid against Toronto. They have had no problem with the Leafs in the past, and will continue to play physically aggressive again tonight. I am very interested to see how the new Leaf mentality plays out against their division leader tonight. I suspect that the Buds will take a new approach March 6th against their original six rival.

Primetime NFL Mock Draft(13-16)

The Randall ST. Sports Wire will be releasing four picks at a time. These are our take on how Round 1 of the NFL draft will go down in April 26th.

Arizona Cardinals - Jonathan Martin, OT Stanford

image

The Cardinals think/thought they have their QB of the future in Kevin Kolb, and even though he was outplayed by John Skelton down the stretch, they have invested too much money in Kolb to turn back after just one year. That being said, the Cardinals would be wise to protect their investment, literally. Jonathan Martin has been protecting Andrew Luck’s blindside at Stanford since his freshman year, and given that large body of work, scouts are certain he has what it takes to take over at LT in the NFL. Let’s hope for Kolb’s sake, they’re right. Martin’s teammate David DeCastro may get consideration here as well.

14.

image

Dallas Cowboys - David DeCastro, OL Stanford

image

As long as the Dallas Cowboys continue to defy logic, and by that I mean having Jerry Jones as their owner/general manager/# 1 fan, they will continue to be, at the very least, a source of solid entertainment for all NFL fans. However, with this pick “America’s Team” will address a glaring need and select David DeCastro, OG from Stanford. Another standout O-linemen from the Cardinal, DeCastro could be the cure for the Cowboys O-line woes. Their inabilities up front killed any chance they had of establishing Felix Jones as their identity on offense, and probably got Tony Romo hammered by opposing D-linemen a couple extra times as well. This pick makes too much sense to actually happen in Dallas. You never know, Jerry might be a Robert Griffin III fan …

image

Philadelphia Eagles - Jerel Worthy, DT Michigan State

image

One of the hallmarks of Andy Reid’s tenure as Head Coach of the Eagles has been unpredictability on draft day. Reid and the Eagles are just as likely to trade this pick as use it. If they do draft on April 26th, look for them to solidify their D-Line. While the Eagles do have some veteran talent on their roster already, they could use an infusion of youth and athleticism to boost their run defense. If the Giants most recent Super Bowl victory taught us anything, it’s that teams can never have too many playmakers on the D-Line. Worthy has been dominant at times in his three year career at Michigan St., proving to be a disruptive and athletic force, who is equally comfortable against the run as he is getting after the quarterback. Worthy’s athleticism allows him to beat interior lineman with speed and quickness, but he also has the lower body strength to effectively occupy multiple blockers against the run. This well-rounded game is why Worthy is almost unanimously considered 1st round talent by league scouts, and he could make an immediate impact on the Eagles D-line rotation. Other possibilities for the Eagles include Luke Kuechly, Dontari Poe, or Vontaze Burfict if he can manage to run A LOT better on his pro day.

image

New York Jets - Kendall Wright, WR Baylor

image

The New York Jets failed to make the AFC Championship Game for the first time in three years, but they still have several high quality players in every phase of the game. Unfortunately, the Jets declined slightly on both sides of the ball this season, and in particular their offense failed to get the job done down the stretch. While I don’t see them moving to replace Mark Sanchez, I do believe the Jets will seek to surround him with less ‘opinonated’ WR’s than Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress. Or at least, Sanchez can hope that Coach Rex Ryan will regain control of the locker room. Kendall Wright is a good fit because he represents the big play ability that was so sorely lacking from the Jets this year. Even if the Jets bring back both Holmes, and Burress, Wright would serve as an upgrade over Jeremy Kerley in the slot. Other possibilities: Mark Barron, Trent Richardson.

Primetime NFL Mock Draft(17-20)

Cincinnati Bengals(from OAK, Carson Palmer trade) - Trent Richardson, RB Alabama

image

The Bengals should be thankful to find a RB of Richardson’s talent and experience at this point in the draft. Even if they opt to bring the aging but sneaky productive Cedric Benson back for another year, Richardson would be a fantastic addition to the Bengal backfield. The Bengals have two picks in the first round thanks to the Oakland Raiders continued efforts to provide comic relief to NFL fans everywhere! (Semi-retired Palmer for a 1st and future 2nd? Really ?) I would love to know what the next best offer Cincinnati received was for Palmer, who hasn’t really been the same player since he suffered that brutal knee injury against the Steelers six years ago. Bottom line is, Cincinnati gets a great player in Trent Richardson, who was dominant at times in the toughest conference in America, the SEC. As a bonus, he split carriers with Mark Ingram for two years, so he has less tread on his tires than most RB prospects. A great steal for the Bengals if he is available. if he isn’t, look for a DB prospect like Mark Barron, or Janoris Jenkins.

18)

image

San Diego Chargers - Mark Barron, SS Alabama

image

The San Diego Chargers had another disappointing season in 2011, and once again they missed the playoffs; this time thanks to a six game losing streak in October and November. One area that failed to live up to pre-season hopes was at strong safety, where the Chargers gambled on the oft-injured, oft-spectacular Bob Sanders, formerly of the Indianapolis Colts. Sanders, not at all surprisingly, missed 14 games and had little to no impact on the Chargers defense. Thus, the Chargers have a need for a solid safety to pair with Eric Weddle. Mark Barron was yet another member of the Crimson Tide defense that shutout LSU 21-0 in the National Championship. In addition to that resume, Barron has top notch physcial tools, measuring 6’2, 218 lbs, and running a 4.55 forty yard dash. Put it all together and you have an impact player for a Chargers defense that needs to keep pace with QB Phillip Rivers and the high flying offense. Other possibilities; Devon Still, and Dont’a Hightower

19)

image

Chicago Bears - Cordy Glenn, OL Georgia

image

The Chicago Bears appeared to be challengers for the NFC Wild Card, but unfortunately their season ended abruptly with crushing injuries to QB Jay Cutler and RB Matt Forte. While both of those players are expected back for the start of 2012, the Bears still have an O-line in desperate need of an upgrade. Cutler is routinely forced to make throws with a pass-rush right in his face, which is a shame because he has one of the strongest arms and quickest releases in the business. If he and Forte can get a little more time and protection from the big guy’s up front, they should be ready to challenge the Packers, and Lions in the NFC North again next year. Cordy Glenn had a fantastic career at Georgia, and is blessed with great size for the OG position, 6’6”, 345 lbs. Some scouts believe he might have the versatility to kick outside, which would benefit the Bears because they need to help up front, although a dark horse pick would be LB as neither Brian Urlacher or Lance Briggs is getting any younger. Other possibilities: Dont’a Hightower, Kevin Zeitler.

20)

image

Tennessee Titans - Nick Perry, DE USC

image

The Titans are a franchise in transition, as they are currently in the process of moving from the Jeff Fisher/Vince Young era to a fresh start with coach Mike Munchak and QB Jake Locker. Year 1 for the new regime was up and down, especially in the backfield where neither Locker nor, Matt Hasselbeck could find a way to get RB Chris Johnson producing consistently. That being said, the Titans have more needs on defense than on offense, and an impact pass rusher like Nick Perry from USC would be a great addition to the TItans D-Line. Perry’s production in college was inconsistent, but he has shown enough promise that he is firmly in the late first, early second round mix. Other possibilities: Dont’a Hightower, Michael Floyd, Devon Still.

Cincinnati Bengals - Janoris Jenkins, CB North Alabama

image

After losing CB Johnathan Joseph in free agency to Houston, the Bengals have a hole to fill opposite Leon Hall. They have spent a lot of picks on their D in recent years, but it really started to pay of this year as they made a surprise playoff appearance. Jenkins fills the hole at CB and should help this defense for many years. If you remember, Jenkins was a standout player at Florida as a true freshman, but he was dismissed from the team for misconduct. He was cited multiple times for Marijuana possession, which ultimately led to his transfer to North Alabama. Luckily for him, he has all of the physical tools that scouts look for in an NFL CB, and Jenkins cemented his first round status at the Senior Bowl. Other possiblities: Luke Kuechly, Michael Floyd, Alshon Jeffrey.

22.

image

St. Louis Rams {STL from CLE (Griffin III) from ATL, Julio Jones} - Devon Still, DT Penn State.

image

If the Browns do trade up with the Rams, St Louis will most likely demand this pick from the Browns, which they got from Atlanta last year. Jeff Fisher would be thrilled to plug a run-stuffer like Still into a young D-line core that includes recent lottery picks Chris Long, and Robert Quinn. At this point it would be a surprise for Still to fall this far in the draft, but the middle of the 1st round is notorious for its unpredictability, so its possible. Other possibilities: Michael Floyd, Alfonzo Dennard.

23.

image

Detroit Lions - Luke Kuechly, LB Boston College

image

The Lions were one of those rare cases where an unproven team lives up to considerable pre-season buzz. They made the playoffs thanks to the inspired play of Matthew Stafford, Calvin johnson and their talented young D-line group. While Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley are great pieces in the middle, the Lions need to improve their linebacking core behind them in order to get better against the run. Given the fact that Stafford and Co. have a tendency to score in a hurry, the D will need to be consistent, especially against the run. Kuechly is the latest standout from BC, and his sideline to sideline range would be a perfect fit for the Lions. Other possibilities: Dont’a Hightower, Michael Floyd, Alshon Jeffrey.

24.

image

Pittsburgh Steelers - Dont’a Hightower, LB Alabama

image

Some matches in mock drafts seem natural to work out, but that’s the fun part. Hightower would fit perfectly with the Steelers, who like to spend their high draft picks on defense, and give their young players time to grow into their new roles as starters. Hightower would have a chance to learn from veteran Steelers LB’s James Harrison, and Lamar Woodley while he establishes himself as a bona fide NFL pass rusher. Other possibilities: Zack Brown, Alfonzo Dennard.

"Are you serious ? . . . C'mon Man!"

The Toronto Maple Leafs have lost the last 6 games they have played in, and have only accumulated one point in that skid. They have lost to last years Western Conference champion Vancouver Canucks, they lost to the Devils in OT(where they picked up their point), and then lost the next four too the Sharks, Capitols, Panthers, and Hawks… So what. These are tough times in the NHL and yes every game matters. But there are 18 games left for the blue and white, and now is not the time for the media to be picking on one of the NHL’s youngest teams.

I agree there is no room for that team to keep losing. They cannot lose back to back games anymore, let alone six, its just not going to work. But they have time. Its not the end of the season, and the Leafs could use support from their fans and media. A tough schedule awaits the Leafs in March that includes a 5 game road trip. And a road trip right now with all of the negative media surrounding so many aspects of the team, could be a good thing.

image

I am so unbelievably tired of listening to radio stations and media alike in the city of Toronto, rag on the Leafs when there are a chunk of games left this season. If this was April 7th, then YES I agree lets talk about how disappointed you are that they didn’t make the playoffs, and lets talk about the “Fire Ron Wilson” chants, and the boycott Burke stuff. BUT there are 18 games left in the Leafs regular season, and this is a league where on any given night, any team can beat any team. Its almost as if the media is ruling the Leafs out… They basically took an “its over find a new show” mentality yesterday. Are you serious… ? The Leafs are only 4 points out of a play off spot. Just because your small heart doesn’t want to cheer anymore, it doesn’t make it ok to broadcast “the Leafs are done” to the whole city. It’s sad really…, to witness a sports professional give up on a team that has that many games left to make a difference. Its either poor math, or a poor judge of character.

image

This leads me to believe that in the centre of the hockey universe, the MEDIA plays a huge role. This is the second youngest team in the NHL with an average age of 26.4. Toronto media harps on their performance and demands elite results from season to season. Everyone in this city is under the impression that once the Leafs claimed a playoff spot, they are not to lose it. Ladies and gentleman this is a league of men literally battling on ice, fighting game in and game out for 8 spots, its far from easy. Its a long season, and each team needs to stay focused in order to make it to the premier games in the spring.

I heard a caller on a local Toronto radio show yesterday tell the host broadcaster that he was tired of watching the Leafs put out a bad product year after year. He literally referred to the “product” as disgusting. He was so tired in fact that he sold his season tickets…C’mon man!!!! How could you sell your Toronto Maple Leaf season tickets right now. This caller was either lying and never had season tickets(because obviously he didn’t appreciate the value), or he doesn’t really understand hockey, and he got those season tickets from a person who once did. Shame on you sir. Have you never experienced a set back, or gotten yourself into a sticky situation. It takes time to get out of ruts and bad places, and it takes even more time to build yourself a great situation and in the Leafs case a dynasty. These things don’t happen over night, they take years just as WE ALL have witnessed to build a hockey team full of greatness. However this all being said, Im glad you gave your tickets away sir… you are exactly the type of fan that we don’t need to help rebuild this great historic franchise. I would much rather you sit on your couch and speak your amateur hockey mind to the people who may or may not care what you have to say.

Now for a little bit of business. The Leafs need to start making some moves up the Eastern Conference board and fast. As mentioned before, the month of March is a tough journey, and it starts against the Canadiens. A team that really doesn’t care about the Leafs current slide. Montreal has had as many problems this season, as any in recent memory. They will be looking to beat the Leafs, because it is always a game they seem to wake up for, no matter who they dress. Then on March 6th, the Leafs are home against the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins. This game in so many ways is very important for the blue and white. If they can beat Boston, they can gain some serious momentum for the remainder of the month, which doesn’t get any easier. After the Bruins, the Leafs are on the road vs the Penguins, home against the Flyers, and then on a 5 game adventure away from home with stops in Washington, Florida, Tampa, Ottawa, and then Boston again. Tough, tough, tough and tough.

image

The Buds need all of the points they can get, and they are certainly doing it the hard way. But its important to remember that the good things are always hard to get. This could be a valuable lesson to explain to a young Leafs team. Amongst all of the negative publicity they get in the Toronto media, Ill be cheering these Leafs to the end of the season in hopes that they bounce back, and fast… And Im not the only one.
